Fallowland project (Offenhaltungsversuche) of Baden-Württemberg

Ongoing succession dominated by Rubus species, site Melchingen

Controlled burning as a management, site Bernau

The Fallowland project of Baden-Württemberg is addressing the question how species-rich agricultural land can be kept open and species-rich using minimum (financial, personal, and technical) effort, which is done by comparing the effect of different maintenance measures at 14 sites in Baden-Württemberg. These measures are grazing (traditional management), mowing, mulching, and controlled burning (alternative managements), with undisturbed succession on separate plots used as a control. Results are evaluated regarding nature conservation and agricultural aspects, and practical recommendations are given. The project provides the opportunity of annual research issues. In a 4-year term, the vegetation of all permanent plots at all sites is recorded to provide data on succession and changes over time. Research covers a broad area including botanical, zoological, ecological, pedological, and further topics.
