Prof. Dr. Bussmann received his Diploma in Biology from the University of Tübingen in 1993 and his doctorate from the University of Bayreuth in 1994.

Bussmann is an ethnobotanist and vegetation ecologist and Head of the Botany Department at the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe. As curator, he is responsible for the collections of vascular plants, mosses and lichens.

He is also Full Professor of Ethnobotany at the Department of Ethnobotany, Institute of Botany, Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia.

From 2007-2017 Prof. Dr. Bussmann Director of the William L. Brown Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, William L. Brown Curator of Economic Botany and Senior Curator.

Before assuming leadership of WLBC, he held academic positions as a Research Fellow in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2007 and was an Associate Professor of Botany and scientific director of the Harold Lyon Arboretum at the University of Hawaii from 2003-2006, and from 1994 to 2003 postdoctoral fellow/researcher at the Department of Plant Physiology at the University of Bayreuth.

He serves as an external supervisor for masters and doctoral theses at universities worldwide.

His work focuses on ethnobotanical research and the preservation of traditional knowledge in low and high mountain ranges, especially the Andes, Caucasus and Himalayas.

Prof. Dr. Bussmann is the author of over 370 peer-reviewed articles, over 1300 peer-reviewed book chapters, and author or editor of 38 books. According to Stanford University, he is one of the 2% most cited scientists worldwide and is considered one of the most influential ethnobotanists worldwide.

He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Springer Nature's Ethnobotany of Mountain Regions book series.

Prof. Dr. Bussmann is past President of the Society for Economic Botany and has served on the boards of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology, the Society of Ethnobiology, the Botanical Society of America, and the International Society of Ethnobiology.

Bussmann is Editor-in-Chief of Ethnobotany Research and Applications, Associate Editor of the Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, Academic Editor of PLOS One, Section Editor of Ethnobotany for the Nordic Journal of Botany, and a member of the Editorial Boards of Ethnobiology and Conservation, Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge, Pleione and Nelumbo.
