Fossils of the Korbach Fissure

Korbacher Spalte

During the 90s the SMNK together with the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. (USA) conducted excavation campaigns in the Late Permian Korbach Fissure (Northern Hesse State) for several years. These excavations were financially supported by the National Geographic Foundation. Today the fissure is a frequented geological monument and has become a landmark of Korbach City. One of the key fossils from the fissure, Procynosuchus, became famous as the “Korbach Dachshund”. Currently there is a project, which is financed by Hesse State for the registration of all fossils from the Korbach Fissure and for the preparation of fossils from the former campaigns. (Cooperation with the Research Institute Senckenberg, the Natural History Museum Kassel and the City of Korbach).
