Professional career

After completing my Ph.D. at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia on the behaviour and ecology of reptile ticks I moved in 1982 as an Assistant Professor to Yarmouk University, Jordan. Thereafter I was a Senior Research Officer at Rhodes University, South Africa, a Temporary Senior Veterinary Officer, Veterinary Research Institute, Onderstepoort, South Africa followed by positions in the Public Health Department at the University of Heidelberg and the department of Ecology and Parasitology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. I officially retired at the beginning of 2018 at which time I took up my current voluntary position at the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe. In addition to this position, I am a Visiting Professor at the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute in the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University in Thailand, as well as at the Walai Rukhavej Botanical Research Institute, Program in Biodiversity, Mahasarakham University, Maha Sarakham, Thailand.

 

Research Interests

  • Pathogen-host-vector ecology
  • The biogeography, behaviour and ecology of ixodid and argasid ticks
  • The systematics, ecology and epidemiology of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini
  • The epidemiology and development of liver fluke induced cholangiocarcinoma
  • Land-use and other environmental changes as a driving factor determining the community structure of human pathogens
