The continental Permo-Carboniferous is one of the most important geological periods for the German industry, due to its sedimentological composition (sandstones, coals and salts). The development of depositional models for the sediments and the reconstruction of the tectonic basin evolution serve as a strong foundation for the economic use. In addition, the Permo-Carboniferous allows insight into the effects of a global climate change (global warming, melting polar ice caps and transition into an ice-free earth), providing a research model for the impact of such a climate change without human influences. The conditions for this research are ideal within the depositional environment of the Saale Basin. In contrast to other federal states of Germany, several completely cored drill profiles are available in Saxony-Anhalt. On behalf of and in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Saxony-Anhalt (Landesamt für Geologie und Bergwesen Sachsen-Anhalt), a new conclusive concept for the whole depositional environment of the Saale Basin will be developed. Detailed stratigraphical documentation of approx. 40 drillings and old mining outcrops will be compiled, using classical (litho-and biostratigraphy, radiometric dating) and alternative analysis methods (e.g. wavelet analysis, magnetostratigraphy). The drilling Querfurt 1/64 exposes nearly 2000 m of Permo-Carboniferous sediments within the Saale Basin and 40 Ma, hence playing a key role for the stratigraphic documentation. The drilling provides a remarkably complete insight into the sedimentological evolution of the Permo-Carboniferous, and can be used as a directional profile for further investigations. These investigations include paleogeography, paleoclimatology and paleoecology, and will be correlated with other profiles. Initial results show a drastic change in the stratigraphical categorization and a facies reassessment of the profile. The next steps include the integration of the drilling profile Querfurt 1/64 into a conclusive stratigraphic concept by investigating radiometric data, bio- and lithostratigraphy as well as magnetostratigraphy, and the correlation with already well-studied and verified profiles within the Thuringian Forest and Southern Permian Basin.

Based on established litho- and climate-stratigraphical direction profiles within the Southern Permian Basin and the Saale Basin, studies of well exposed Permo-Carboniferous profiles in Baden-Wuerttemberg will commence from autumn 2012.
